Developing Objectives
Here is a list of suggested long term musical objectives for students:
Preschool/Kindergarten
Students will:
- Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
- Perform rhythms with a steady beat.
- Perform music expressively.

- Identify expressive use of repetition and contrast in simple songs and short listening examples.
- Express through creative movement such musical concepts as:
- steady beat
- accent
- gradually getting louder or quieter
- staccato
- legato
- Engaging in singing games.
- Play simple rhythmic-melodic patterns on classroom instruments.
- Read and create simple musical notation.
Grades 3/4
Students will:
- Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
- Sing simple rounds and descants in tune.
- Sing songs expressive of text

Grades 5/6
Students will:
- Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
- Sing songs in two or three parts.
- Demonstrate rhythmic sense through:
- identifying simple-to-complex rhythms (both verbally and aurally)
- playing rhythms in 2/4, 3/4, 6/8, mixed meter
- Playing simple harmonic accompaniments on guitar, keyboard, or omnichord.
- Play simple melodies and descants on melody bells or records.
- Identify music from other parts of the world according to its melody, rhythm, texture, tone color, and formal structure.
- Develop musical leadership by taking part in musical plays.
- Read and write simple musical notation.
