Developing Objectives

Here is a list of suggested long term musical objectives for students:

Preschool/Kindergarten
Students will:
  1. Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
  2. Perform rhythms with a steady beat.
  3. Perform music expressively.
    1. loud-quiet
    2. fast-slow
    3. legato-staccato
  4. Respond to expressive qualities of music through movement.
    1. duple meter and triple meter
    2. strong accents and changing accents
    3. steady beat
    4. changing dynamics
  5. Play simple rhythms-melodic patterns on classroom instruments.
  6. Sing, play, move and create music expressive of individual imaginations.

Grades 1/2
Students will:
  1. Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
  2. Distinguish between high/low, fast/slow and instrument tone colors.
  3. Identify expressive use of repetition and contrast in simple songs and short listening examples.
  4. Express through creative movement such musical concepts as:
    1. steady beat
    2. accent
    3. gradually getting louder or quieter
    4. staccato
    5. legato
  5. Engaging in singing games.
  6. Play simple rhythmic-melodic patterns on classroom instruments.
  7. Read and create simple musical notation.

Grades 3/4
Students will:
  1. Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
  2. Sing simple rounds and descants in tune.
  3. Sing songs expressive of text
    1. legato and staccato
    2. dynamics
    3. phrasing
  4. Analyze music in terms of elements.
    1. melodic phrasing
    2. tone colors
    3. formal structure
  5. Read or create simple musical notation.
  6. Engaging in singing games and dances.
  7. Play simple rhythmic-melodic patterns on classroom instruments.

Grades 5/6
Students will:
  1. Sing short songs in tune, with good breathing habits and tone quality.
  2. Sing songs in two or three parts.
  3. Demonstrate rhythmic sense through:
    1. identifying simple-to-complex rhythms (both verbally and aurally)
    2. playing rhythms in 2/4, 3/4, 6/8, mixed meter
  4. Playing simple harmonic accompaniments on guitar, keyboard, or omnichord.
  5. Play simple melodies and descants on melody bells or records.
  6. Identify music from other parts of the world according to its melody, rhythm, texture, tone color, and formal structure.
  7. Develop musical leadership by taking part in musical plays.
  8. Read and write simple musical notation.
